ENTANGLED SOCIETY / OBSERVATION HUB

FILE SPB-001 / POPULATION RECORD

The Simulated Public

What happens when society is consulted before it exists?

Before a product is launched,

before a policy is introduced,

before a community is formed,

before the public has responded—

another public may already have been asked.

Observe the loop

This page observes a public that may not exist. It does not forecast demand.

Anonymous records gather into the word PUBLIC, then dissolve toward a real public as the page is scrolled. People become a public by being aggregated.

Definition

The Simulated Public

A synthetic population used to anticipate collective reactions before decisions are introduced into the real world.

What happens when the simulated public begins to influence the real public?

Its predicted reaction may itself alter the options available to the real public.

Conceptual hierarchy

Unit, population, field

Synthetic Person is the unit.

Simulated Public is the population.

Entangled Society is the interaction field.

  1. Synthetic Person
  2. Synthetic Population
  3. Simulated Public
  4. Real-world Decision
  5. Entangled Society

Not a ranking. Unit → population → interaction field.

Five stages

How a simulated public is assembled

  1. What disappears before humans ever have a chance to choose it?

Core observation layers

Connected layers

The representation problem

Who gets simulated?

Bias here is not only an ethics checklist. It is an assignment of existence.

  • Who is in the data?

  • Who is absent?

  • Who is overrepresented?

  • Whose behavior is treated as normal?

  • Who becomes an outlier?

  • What happens to people who cannot be modeled easily?

The compression problem

Reality Compression

When the complexity of real people is reduced into attributes that simulations can process.

  1. person
  2. profile
  3. attributes
  4. probabilities
  5. persona

How much of a person can disappear before the simulation stops representing a person?

Also observed from

The pre-selection problem

What disappears before anyone can choose it?

Product A83% predicted preference

Product B17%

If a firm never launches B, the Simulated Public did not only predict a future. It deleted a future option.

Prediction can become pre-selection.

Self-fulfilling simulation

The Self-Fulfilling Public

  1. Simulation
  2. Prediction
  3. Decision
  4. Environment
  5. Human Behavior
  6. Data
  7. Simulation

The model becomes more accurate because the world was changed to resemble the model.

Critical questions

Questions that remain open

01 / 08

Can people consent to being statistically reconstructed?

02 / 08

Who represents the people who are missing from the model?

03 / 08

Can a synthetic majority silence a real minority?

04 / 08

What happens when simulated preference determines real availability?

05 / 08

Can a public exist without citizens?

06 / 08

If a simulated society disagrees with the real society, which one does the institution trust?

07 / 08

Can prediction become governance?

08 / 08

What happens when society is optimized for people who do not exist?

This record will be counted as public.

  • DUMMY TRACE / absence

Absent from the model. Therefore absent from the option set.

The question to take

What happens when predictions about people begin to determine what people can experience?

Are we observing society, or beginning to pre-select it?
