When Labs Teach a Method They Did Not Invent
When a machine-origin scientific method is taught by humans as ordinary laboratory practice.

After AlphaFold2's 2021 publication, protein-structure prediction moved from a specialist model into laboratory instruction: researchers now teach one another how to run, read, and limit the method, including through EMBL-EBI training and community implementations such as ColabFold.

What changed
The laboratory no longer only consumes machine output. It can inherit a machine-origin method as part of how science is taught.
Persistence
EMBL-EBI now trains researchers to run and interpret the method. Community tools such as ColabFold made the same practice portable across labs. A 2022 community assessment treated AlphaFold2 models as usable across core structural-biology tasks when confidence metrics are read critically. The AlphaFold database remains a shared reference set.
Origin decay
The origin is still named. The method is already taught as laboratory practice. Origin decay here is incomplete: tradition is forming while the source is still visible.
